Four stickers → one code
Before QRIS, an Indonesian merchant taped up a separate QR sticker for every wallet, and customers had to guess which app matched which sticker. The private market had produced fragmentation, not infrastructure.
A single national QR standard changed the topology: any wallet pays any merchant with one code.
The numbers
- 30M+ merchants onboarded onto one interoperable rail.
- Onboarding cost collapsed — a new merchant joins once, not once per wallet.
- New wallets compete on service, not on lock-in, because they all speak the same rail.
The lesson for every other sector
QRIS is the existence proof. The same move — replace competing private layers with one open public rail — is available in health, education, agriculture, energy and cross-border commerce. Every sector is still waiting for its QRIS.
